Behaviour problems are one of the most challenging issues we face with autism and other developmental disabilities. For many behaviour challenges our first instinct is to ask “How do I get this to stop?” This question may lead to implementing short term fixes rather than developing long term solutions. Using the principles of applied behaviour analysis, we emphasise the use of systematic reinforcement and instruction in functional activities and communication skills in order to decrease the targeted behaviours.
